If you are relocating to another country for a few months, possibly for work or to spend time with family it is going to be likely that you will want to take a few personal effects with you for the duration of your stay. You may also greatly benefit of shipping your vehicle overseas on a temporary licence to avoid some additional charges, check with customs of the country you are moving to and find out if you can qualify for a temporary import licence.
Shipping your vehicle
To ship your vehicle overseas you can choose between two methods, roll on/roll off; this is where you vehicle is driven onto a specially designed vessel and secured under deck by straps and chocks or the alternative method is to ship your vehicle inside a shipping container; your vehicle is professionally loaded and secured inside a 20FT or 40FT container and lifted onto the container vessel using a crane positioned at the port.
Shipping Personal effects
Depending on where you are shipping your vehicle to, you may be able to load your vehicle with your goods, make sure you check with the shipping line first otherwise they may refuse to load your vehicle. Please also note that all shipping lines will not take any responsibility for any damage, loss or theft of any goods left in the vehicle so make sure that you secure you goods and do not leave any expensive items in the vehicle.
A more secure way to ship your personal effects inside your vehicle would be to ship them inside a dedicated shipping container. If you ship your vehicle inside a container, the container doors are locked for the duration of the journey and can only opened by customs, your agent or yourself. You cannot load personal effects outside of the vehicle inside the container as the risk of damaging both your vehicle and your goods is too high.
You will need to make sure that you create a packing list for all items that you load into your vehicle, you will need to send a copy of this to your UK agent and overseas agent so that they can pass it onto the relevant contacts.
