Import Regulations
Most cars outside of North America cannot be imported into Canada. However, there are a few special circumstances that allow certain vehicles to be shipped from outside of the US:
- The vehicle must be 15 years or older, not a bus, and must be a part of the regulated class of vehicle under the motor Vehicle Safety Act
- The vehicle is a bus manufactured before Jan 1, 1971.
- The vehicle is non-regulated.
- The vehicle meets all Canadian vehicle standards, and must be purchased new as part of a manufacturer’s foreign buyer program (the importer must confirm the vehicle’s entry with Transport Canada).
- The vehicle is a returning Canadian Vehicle, originally purchased in Canada, and still meets Canadian standards.

Clearance and fees
All cars imported into Canada are subject to duty and tax. This is paid to the Canadian Customs on arrival of the vehicle. The price will be calculated as a percentage of the vehicle’s value, in Canadian Dollars. As part of the importing process, you will be required to fill out a CBSA Form B4E, to declare this information about your vehicle. The rates for import duty and Goods and Service Tax are shown below:
Tax Type | Rate |
Import Duty | 6.1% |
Goods and Service Tax | 5% |
Registration
Once your car has been approved through customs, and you have paid all outstanding duty and tax, your vehicle will need to be registered to be road legal in Canada. The rules and procedures will differ depending on the area you are in, so ensure you contact the correct provincial vehicle registration office before shipping your car to Canada. This will ensure that the process moves smoothly and there are no hidden surprises at the border. Always remember to obtain and send any documentation ahead of your shipment, to leave plenty of time for the authorities to approve them.
Documentation includes:
- V5C (or title document) for the vehicle
- Photo page of the consignees passport
- Purchase/Sales Invoice of the vehicle
