Ro-ro ships or ferries are not just prevalent in the short-sea trades linking mainland Britain with Ireland and the near Continent.  The concept of ro-ro, which is first dawned during Second World War as landing ships, is even stronger today, advanced by European penchant for cars of Far Eastern origin and the specialist multi-deck car carriers that also double-up as deep-sea freight ships for rolling cargo.  The Pure Car Carriers (PCCs) and Pure Car Truck Carriers (PCTCs) which can carry some 6,000 units apiece are now the backbone of deep-sea ro-ro services, although there are specialists offering ro-ro and container configurations, notable examples being Atlantic Container Line, with its hybrid range of specialist vessels on the North Atlantic, and OT Africa Line.
