How to Ship Your Vehicle to Canada

Export to Canada is simple to arrange here at First Base Freight Ltd, as we have a weekly Roll on/Roll off service leaving from the UK port of Southampton to Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada.  We also offer a transit by Groupage and Container which will ship from Liverpool UK, to Montreal, Canada.

The main method of shipment that you will most likely use when shipping your vehicle to Canada is roll on/roll off, the most noticeable advantage to this method of shipment is that it is a lot cheaper than container based shipping this is due to the lack of charges that would come from the use of the port crane facilities as well as the container unloading services, with RoRo your car is simple driven onto the vessel and then parked up and secured to the vessel itself making sure that it does not move around during its journey overseas.  The one big issue that presents itself with the RoRo service is the fact that you are unable to store any personal items within the vehicle when it is being shipped.

If however you are looking to ship personal items with your vehicle when shipping to Canada you will be best shipping with the container services we offer, even though this will result in slightly higher charges when you reach your destination, you will however be allowed to transport your personal items within the vehicle while it is being shipped within its container.

Before you ship your vehicle over to Canada you will need to make sure that it will be accepted for export, and to make sure that your vehicle is, you will need to make sure that it comes in line with the Canadian Vehicle Import Regulations set in place.  The Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA) with Transport Canada to ensure that all vehicles imported into Canada are done so, in-line with the safety standards set in place.

With the exception of vehicles that were manufactured for sale in the United States, Transport Canada prohibits the importation of all other foreign vehicles manufactured for sale within the U.S.  While your vehicle may be allowed to be shipped into Canada it may require some modifications to be made to it to make sure that it falls in line with the Canada Import Regulations.

To get started with booking your vehicles journey to Canada you will be required to provide some very important paperwork copies, these will act as your prove of the purchase as well as your proof of identity.

  • The Vehicles V5C (Registration Certificate)
  • A copy of the photo page of your passport
  • A copy of the Purchase/Sales Invoice for the vehicle
  • A copy of your MOT Certificate (Only needed if we are collecting the vehicle for you)
  • A copy of your consignee’s passport photo page (If you are not collecting the vehicle yourself at the port)
