RoRo vs Container Shipping

RoRo vs Container Shipping: Which Is Better for Shipping Your Car Overseas?

It’s a great question — and the honest answer is: it depends on your vehicle, your destination, and what matters most to you. Both methods are legitimate and widely used. Both have genuine advantages. But they’re not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one for your situation can cost you time, money, or worse — damage to your vehicle.

At Ship Cars Ltd  we offer both RoRo and container shipping to over 200 destinations worldwide. We’ve helped thousands of customers make this exact decision, and this guide is designed to walk you through it — clearly, honestly, and without the jargon.

What Is RoRo Shipping?

RoRo vs Container Shipping

RoRo stands for Roll-on/Roll-off. It’s exactly what it sounds like — your vehicle is driven directly onto a specialised vessel under its own power, secured to the deck, and then driven off again at the destination port.

Think of a RoRo vessel as an enormous floating car park. Vehicles are parked in rows across multiple decks, strapped down securely, and transported across open water. It’s a tried and tested method that’s been used in the international shipping industry for decades.

RoRo works best when:

  • Your vehicle is fully operational and can be driven on and off the ship
  • You’re shipping a standard car, SUV, or light commercial vehicle on a well-served trade route
  • You want the most cost-effective option and aren’t shipping any personal effects alongside the car
  • Your destination port has a dedicated RoRo terminal (not all ports do)

Important: For most of the destinations personal belongings cannot be placed inside a vehicle shipped via RoRo — port security requires the vehicle to be completely empty. Electric vehicles are also not accepted on RoRo services due to battery safety regulations.

 What Is Container Shipping?

Container shipping involves loading your vehicle into a sealed steel shipping container — either a 20ft or 40ft box — which is then loaded onto a cargo vessel. Once the container doors are closed and locked, your vehicle isn’t touched again until it reaches the destination port.

At Ship Cars Ltd , we offer two container options:

Shared Container Service

Your vehicle shares a container with other cars heading to the same destination. It’s professionally loaded, strapped, and secured. This is the most popular option for budget-conscious customers who still want the security of container shipping.

Dedicated Container Service

Your vehicle travels alone in its own private container — ideal for high-value, classic, luxury, or non-running vehicles. You also have significantly more space to load personal effects alongside your car (subject to destination customs rules).

Container shipping works best when:

  • Your vehicle is non-running, classic, or high-value
  • You want to ship personal effects alongside your car
  • You’re shipping to a destination where RoRo terminals aren’t available
  • You’re moving an electric or hybrid vehicle (EVs must always travel by container)
  • You simply want maximum protection throughout the journey

Real Example: A customer from Leeds shipped a fully restored 1974 Land Rover Series III to Cyprus using our shared container service. The vehicle was non-running after restoration work and couldn’t be accepted on RoRo. It arrived in perfect condition, packed alongside tools and spare parts — all declared and cleared through customs without issue.

RoRo vs Container: A Direct Comparison

Here’s how the two methods stack up side by side across the factors that matter most:

Factor RoRo Shipping Container Shipping
Cost Generally lower Shared = competitive; Dedicated = higher
Vehicle Condition Must be fully operational Running or non-running accepted
Protection Level Exposed to elements on deck Sealed steel — maximum protection
Personal Effects Strictly prohibited Allowed (subject to destination rules)
Electric Vehicles Not accepted Accepted (hazard surcharge may apply)
Classic/Luxury Cars Possible but not recommended Strongly recommended
Destination Availability Limited to RoRo ports Wider range of destinations
Sailing Frequency Fixed liner schedule Up to 4 times per month (destination dependent)

 What About the Cost Difference?

This is where things get more nuanced than most people expect. RoRo is typically cheaper per vehicle on the sea freight element — that part is true. However, the total cost picture isn’t always so straightforward.

Consider this: if your destination country charges significantly higher import duties on vehicles arriving via RoRo rather than container (some do), or if your destination port doesn’t have a RoRo terminal and requires onward trucking, the cost advantage can disappear quickly.

To give you a real-world indication from our UK services:

  • RoRo to Australia (Sydney): From approximately £995 for a standard saloon
  • Shared Container to Australia (Sydney): From approximately £1,395
  • Shared Container to Karachi, Pakistan: From approximately £1,095 (container only — RoRo not available)
  • Dedicated Container to Karachi: From approximately £1,495

Customer Snapshot: Sarah from Glasgow used our RoRo service to ship her 2020 Ford Focus to Melbourne, Australia. She saved around £350 compared to the shared container quote and the car arrived in excellent condition within 38 days — well within the expected transit window.

Prices vary by destination, vehicle size, and sailing schedule. Always request a personalised quote from our team for the most accurate figure.

Which Offers Better Protection?

Let’s be transparent here — container shipping wins on protection, every time.

With RoRo, your car sits on an open deck or lower deck of the vessel. While it’s secured with straps and the risk of serious damage is low, your vehicle is exposed to salt air, humidity, and the elements for the duration of the voyage. Multiple port handlers may move the vehicle during loading and unloading.

With container shipping, your vehicle is sealed inside a steel box from the moment it leaves our UK depot until it arrives at the destination port. Nobody touches it. There’s no exposure to weather, salt spray, or port handling risks beyond the initial load-in.

For classic cars, luxury vehicles, electric cars, or anything of significant personal or financial value, we always recommend container shipping — and we’ll tell you that honestly, regardless of which option generates a higher quote.

Which Should You Choose?

RoRo vs Container Shipping

Here’s our straightforward recommendation, built from over a decade of shipping experience:

Choose RoRo if:

  • Your car is in full working order and you’re comfortable with open-deck transit
  • You’re shipping to a popular, well-served destination with an established RoRo terminal
  • Budget is your primary concern and the vehicle is a standard daily driver
  • You don’t need to ship any personal effects or additional items

Choose Container if:

  • Your vehicle is non-running, restored, classic, or high value
  • You want to include personal effects or household items
  • You’re shipping an electric, hybrid, or modified vehicle
  • Your destination only accepts container shipments (e.g., Pakistan)
  • You want complete peace of mind throughout transit

Customer Experience: Hassan from Wolverhampton initially enquired about RoRo for his 2019 BMW M4 to Dubai — but after speaking with our team, opted for a dedicated container. He loaded several boxes of personal effects alongside the car and said it was “the best decision — the car arrived spotless.”

What About Insurance?

Regardless of which shipping method you choose, we strongly recommend taking out marine insurance. At  Ship Cars Ltd, we offer two levels of cover:

  • Total Loss Cover — 1% of declared vehicle value + shipping cost
  • Comprehensive Cover — 1.5% of declared vehicle value + shipping cost (covers scratches and cosmetic damage — available for vehicles up to 10 years old)

A vehicle condition report is required for comprehensive cover and is provided free of charge when we collect your vehicle. A £35 fee applies if you deliver to our depot.
