Truck Shipping To and From the UK

Shipping Trucks Internationally — Specialist Handling for Heavy Commercial Vehicles

Trucks are among the most complex vehicles to ship internationally. They are tall, heavy, and in many cases dimensionally incompatible with standard RORO vessel decks or enclosed container shipping  configurations. They carry residual fluids and fuel loads that are governed by strict maritime dangerous goods regulations. And for the businesses that own them — haulage operators, dealerships, fleet exporters, overseas project managers — they represent significant capital assets that need to arrive at the destination in working order, on time, and with the correct paperwork in place.

At Ship cars ltd , truck shipping is a service we handle regularly and with the depth of experience that complex, high-value commercial vehicle shipping demands. We ship HGVs, rigids, tractor units, curtain siders, tippers, flatbeds, refrigerated trucks, and specialist commercial vehicles to destinations across Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, the Americas, and Europe — every week. We know which shipping methods work for which configurations, we know which ports have the handling equipment to manage oversize commercial vehicles, and we know how to get the documentation right the first time.

This page sets out how we approach truck shipping, which methods we use, how European road freight fits in, and what you need to know before your vehicle moves.

The Reality of Truck Shipping  Why It Requires Specialist Knowledge

container shipping

There is a temptation to treat truck shipping as a straightforward extension of standard car shipping. It is not. The variables that apply to truck shipments are in a different category entirely, and each one needs to be addressed before any booking is confirmed.

Height is the most immediate challenge. A standard enclosed shipping container has an internal height of approximately 2.35 metres — which rules out the vast majority of HGVs, tractor units, and larger commercial trucks entirely. High-cube containers extend that to approximately 2.69 metres, which accommodates some vans and smaller rigids but still excludes most full-size trucks. For the majority of truck shipments, the shipping method needs to move beyond standard enclosed container loading.

Weight is the second constraint. Container payload limits — typically 28 tonnes for a 20ft box — are often insufficient for fully built-up trucks with significant kerb weights. Flat-rack and breakbulk solutions allow for considerably higher payloads but require specialist loading and securing arrangements.

Cab configuration and superstructure add further complexity. A curtainsider with a full trailer, a refrigerated truck with an integral cooling unit, or a tipper with a raised body all present specific loading and securing requirements that a standard freight booking cannot simply accommodate.

Fluid compliance is non-negotiable on every international truck shipment. Fuel tanks must be at the required level — typically no more than one-quarter full on most routes — and hydraulic systems and cooling circuits must comply with IMDG maritime dangerous goods rules for the route in question.

None of this makes truck shipping unmanageable. It simply requires a team that knows the subject. That is precisely what Ship cars ltd brings to every truck shipment we handle.

Shipping Methods for Trucks

RoRo — Roll-on/Roll-off

RoRo vehicle shipping is the method of choice for trucks that are fully operational, within the height parameters of the RoRo terminal, and heading to a destination served by a dedicated RoRo service. On a RoRo sailing, the truck is driven directly onto the vessel under its own power, positioned on the car deck or commercial vehicle deck, secured, and driven off at the destination port.

RoRo is well-suited for:

  • Rigid trucks and tractor units within standard RoRo height clearances — typically up to approximately 4.5 metres
  • Curtainsiders, flatbeds, and box trucks within vessel deck height restrictions
  • Destinations with established RoRo terminals — particularly West Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean, where RoRo commercial vehicle movements are well-established trade flows
  • Operational trucks in working order that can be driven by port handlers at both ends of the voyage

The practical limit of RoRo for truck shipping is height. High-sided vehicles, trucks with tall refrigeration units, and anything approaching or exceeding 4.5 metres needs to be assessed on a vessel-by-vessel basis — and in many cases, an alternative shipping method is the right answer.

Real-world example: A truck dealer in the East Midlands shipped four MAN TGS 18-tonne rigid trucks to Lagos, Nigeria, via RoRo from Tilbury. All four vehicles were in working order, within RoRo height parameters, and properly prepared with fuel levels reduced before loading. The consignment sailed on schedule and arrived at Apapa port, Lagos, in 22 days. Our Lagos agent coordinated customs clearance, and all four trucks were released within nine working days of arrival — ahead of the buyer’s projected handover date.

Flat-Rack Container Shipping

For trucks that exceed standard RoRo height restrictions or cannot be accommodated on enclosed container services, flat-rack container shipping is our primary alternative. A flat-rack is a reinforced steel deck — with collapsible end walls in most configurations — that allows the truck to be crane-loaded from above and secured using heavy-duty chain lashing and twist locks at the deck anchor points.

Flat-racks travel on standard container vessels, which means they benefit from the frequency and reliability of the global container shipping network. They are available in both 20ft and 40ft configurations, and for trucks that exceed even flat-rack dimensions, open-top and breakbulk options are available.

Flat-rack shipping is appropriate for:

  • Tractor units and HGVs that exceed RoRo height clearances
  • Trucks with fixed superstructures — tippers, crane trucks, concrete mixers — that cannot be easily driven through a standard terminal
  • Non-running or non-driveable trucks that need crane or forklift loading
  • Trucks with detachable trailers or bodywork where components are shipped separately and reunited at destination

Customer experience: A haulage operator in the North West shipped three DAF XF tractor units to Mombasa, Kenya, on flat-rack containers from Felixstowe. The cab-over configurations exceeded standard RoRo clearances, making flat-rack the only practical option. Our team coordinated crane loading at the port stuffing facility, managed UK export customs clearance for all three units, and the flat-racks arrived at Mombasa on schedule. The operator’s feedback: “Everything handled without us having to chase a single thing.”

Open-Top Container Shipping

Open-top containers — standard 20ft or 40ft containers with a removable tarpaulin roof — are used for trucks and truck components that can be crane-loaded from above but sit within the container’s width and length footprint. They are particularly useful for tall cab units, tall refrigerated truck bodies, and truck components such as crane bodywork or specialised superstructures.

Where the cargo height exceeds the container walls slightly, an over-height declaration is filed with the shipping line and the tarpaulin accommodates the excess. Our team manages this process — including the necessary advance notification to the shipping line — before the unit is loaded.

Road Freight — Truck Shipping to Europe

For trucks being delivered to European destinations — Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Spain, Poland, Italy, and beyond — road transport is the fastest, most direct, and most cost-effective method. There are no container port bookings, no vessel schedules to align with, and no destination port handling charges. The truck is collected in the UK and delivered to the European address directly.

We arrange specialist road freight for truck movements to Europe, including:

  • Drive-away service — where the truck is driven to the European destination by our driver, using ferry or Channel Tunnel crossings
  • Transporter or low-loader service — where the truck is carried rather than driven, appropriate for non-running vehicles or oversized configurations
  • Abnormal load movements for trucks with configurations that exceed standard road transport dimension limits, including route surveys and permit applications

Post-Brexit customs documentation — export declarations, commercial invoices, and CMR consignment notes — is handled in full by our team. We also advise on any import requirements at the European destination relevant to the truck’s specification and age.

Transit times for European truck road freight movements typically range from 1 to 5 working days depending on the destination country and the transport method used.

Real-world example: A fleet operator in Birmingham arranged drive-away delivery for two Volvo FH tractor units to a logistics company in Warsaw, Poland. Our driver collected both units on a Monday morning, crossed via the Channel Tunnel, and delivered both trucks to the Warsaw depot by Wednesday afternoon. Post-Brexit export documentation was handled entirely by our team — the client signed off the collection paperwork and received a delivery confirmation two days later.

Pre-Shipment Preparation for Trucks

How Much Does It Cost

Every international truck shipment requires proper preparation before the vehicle is loaded. For sea freight movements, the standard requirements are:

  • Fuel level reduced to the required level for the destination and shipping method — typically no more than one-quarter tank; some destinations and shipping lines require empty tanks on HGVs
  • Hydraulic and auxiliary systems checked and, where required, drained or isolated in compliance with IMDG maritime dangerous goods rules
  • Battery isolation — batteries disconnected and terminals insulated for container and flat-rack shipments
  • Tyres inflated to appropriate pressure for sea transit
  • Loose items removed from the cab and load area — personal effects, tools, and unsecured cargo are not permitted on sea freight movements
  • Full dimensions and weight confirmed prior to booking — we require length, width, height in transport configuration, and gross vehicle weight for every truck shipment

For trucks destined for Australia, New Zealand, or any Pacific destination, the vehicle must be thoroughly cleaned of all soil, organic material, and biological matter before loading. Biosecurity inspections are mandatory on arrival, and a failed inspection results in port storage charges and mandatory cleaning at the owner’s cost. Our team will flag these requirements clearly at the point of booking.

Documentation for International Truck Exports from the UK

Every international truck export from the UK requires the following documentation as a minimum:

  • V5C Logbook — proof of ownership and vehicle identity; Section 11 completed for permanent export DVLA notification
  • Commercial Invoice — accurately reflecting the truck’s value, specification, and transaction details
  • Export Declaration — submitted to HMRC via the Customs Declaration Service with the correct HS commodity code for the truck type
  • EORI Number — required for all UK commercial exporters
  • Bill of Lading — issued by the shipping line in the exporter’s name for sea freight movements
  • Pre-Shipment Inspection Certificate — required for exports to Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Bangladesh, and several other destinations; issued by an accredited inspection body prior to loading
  • Dangerous Goods Declaration — required where the truck carries regulated fluid volumes or energy systems classified under IMDG maritime regulations

Our team manages the export declaration process in full. We check every document before submission and flag any inconsistencies or missing items before the vehicle reaches the port — because documentation errors discovered at the port gate are always more expensive to fix than those identified beforehand.
