Step-by-Step Guide to Shipping a Car from the UK Worldwide

Shipping a car from the UK to another country is more straightforward than most people expect — as long as you know what to prepare, what to expect at each stage, and who to trust with the job. Whether you’re relocating permanently, selling a vehicle to an overseas buyer, or moving a classic car to a new owner abroad, the process follows a clear and manageable sequence.

At Ship Cars Ltd, we handle international vehicle shipments daily — to destinations including the USA, Australia, the UAE, Cyprus, South Africa, and well beyond. This guide walks you through every stage of the process, from your very first enquiry right through to your vehicle being released at the destination port.

Get a Quote For Car Shipping and Confirm Your Route

The process starts with a conversation. To give you an accurate quote, we’ll need a few basic details: the make, model, year, and dimensions of your vehicle, your collection or drop-off location in the UK, and your destination country or port.

From there, we’ll confirm which shipping method suits your vehicle and route — either RORO (Roll-on/Roll-off) or container shipping — along with estimated transit times, departure schedules, and a clear all-in price. There are no hidden charges and no vague estimates. You’ll know exactly what you’re paying and what’s included before you commit to anything.

“I contacted Ship cars ltd after searching for quotes online — their price was fair, but what stood out was how quickly they explained every step. I felt in good hands from the very first call.” — Customer shipping a Toyota Land Cruiser to Nairobi.

Choose Your Shipping Method: RORO or Container

Understanding the difference between RORO and container shipping is important — both are widely used from the UK, and the right choice depends on your vehicle and destination.

RORO shipping is the most popular and cost-effective option for standard cars, SUVs, vans, and light commercial vehicles. Your vehicle is driven directly onto a purpose-built vessel at the UK departure port, secured on the car deck, and driven off again on arrival. It’s efficient, reliable, and well-suited to most routes worldwide.

Container shipping is the preferred option for classic cars, high-value vehicles, non-runners, electric vehicles, and any shipment where extra protection or privacy is required. Your vehicle is loaded into a steel shipping container — either as a sole load in a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container, or as part of a shared groupage arrangement — and sealed for the entire voyage.

Electric vehicles are required to travel by container on all international routes. If you’re unsure which method is right for your vehicle, our team will guide you based on your specific circumstances.

Gather Your Documents To Ship Your Car

Documentation is one of the most important parts of any international vehicle shipment. Getting this right early prevents delays at the port and avoids complications at the destination.

For a standard UK export, the documents you’ll typically need include:

  • V5C logbook (original) — proof of ownership; you retain the main document and submit Section 11 to the DVLA to notify them of permanent export
  • Passport (photo page) — to confirm your identity as the exporter
  • Bill of sale or purchase invoice — used to declare the vehicle’s value for customs purposes
  • Consignee details — the name and contact details of the person collecting the vehicle at the destination
  • MOT certificate — required if the vehicle is being collected from your address by one of our trade plate drivers

For certain destinations such as Australia and New Zealand, additional pre-approval documentation is required before the vessel departs. We handle the guidance and coordination for all of this as part of your booking. For electric or hybrid vehicles, a Dangerous Goods Declaration covering the high-voltage battery will also be needed.

If you’re permanently exporting your vehicle (for 12 months or more), you must also notify the DVLA by completing the V5C/4 section of your logbook and sending it to the DVLA before or at the time of export.

Arrange Vehicle Collection or Port Drop-Off

Once your booking is confirmed and documents are in order, we’ll arrange for your vehicle to be collected from your home, business, or dealership anywhere in the UK. We use a network of professional trade plate drivers and enclosed transporters to bring your vehicle safely to the nominated departure port.

If you prefer to deliver the vehicle directly to the port yourself, we’ll give you clear instructions on the terminal, gate times, and check-in requirements. Either way, we make sure your vehicle arrives at the port on time and ready for the vessel’s cut-off date.

Port Check-In and Pre-Shipment Inspection

When your vehicle arrives at the UK departure port, it goes through a formal check-in process at the terminal. A condition report is completed, fuel levels are checked and reduced to no more than a quarter of a tank (a standard requirement for RORO vessels), and any personal items are removed from inside the vehicle.

We recommend photographing your vehicle thoroughly before it leaves your hands — all four sides, the roof, the interior, and any pre-existing marks or scuffs. This documentation is important for insurance purposes and provides a clear record of your vehicle’s condition before it boards.

“Ship Cars Ltd arranged collection from my driveway in Manchester and had my Defender at Southampton within 24 hours. The whole handover process was smooth and professional.” — Customer exporting a Land Rover Defender to Cyprus.

Loading and Ocean Transit

Your vehicle is loaded onto the vessel by experienced port stevedores, secured using specialist lashing and deck anchors, and the sailing schedule is confirmed. RORO vessels depart on fixed schedules, so early booking is always advisable — particularly during busy periods.

During transit, your vehicle is secured in the vessel’s enclosed car decks for the duration of the voyage. Transit times vary depending on the destination:

We keep you updated throughout the voyage and provide tracking information so you know where your vehicle is at every stage.

Customs Clearance at the Destination

When the vessel arrives at the destination port, your vehicle goes through the import customs process in that country. Import duties, VAT, and local compliance requirements vary significantly depending on the destination — and this is one of the areas where preparation really pays off.

We brief every client clearly on what to expect at the receiving end before the vessel sails. For many destinations, we can also recommend trusted local port agents who will manage customs clearance on your behalf and handle any import declarations required.

Key documents needed at the destination typically include the Bill of Lading, your V5C or certificate of title, the commercial invoice, your passport, and any import approval documentation specific to that country.

Collection or Delivery at Destination

Once customs clearance is complete, your vehicle is released from the port and available for collection. Depending on the destination and your requirements, collection can be arranged directly from the port or via a local delivery service to your address.

At this point, your international vehicle shipment is complete. For most routes, the end-to-end process from booking to delivery takes between four and eight weeks, depending on the destination and customs processing times.
